At its height, it stood as a beacon of Black entrepreneurship and resilience, housing over 600 businesses, 21 churches, 30 grocerystores, 2 movie theaters, private airplanes, a hospital, a post office, schools, libraries, law offices, and even a bus system.This remarkable community proved what is possible when vision, ownership, and collaboration come together.

The Tragedy

The 1921 Tulsa Massacre

In May 1921, Black Wall Street faced devastation. Within 24 hours, over 1,200 homes and hundreds of businesses were destroyed. Families were displaced, lives were lost, and the community’s wealth was stripped away. What could not be destroyed was the spirit and legacy of Greenwood. While the physical structures were reduced to ashes, the vision of community wealth, ownership, and empowerment endures.
